The Correale Museum of Terranova .

A charming historic residence, now the seat of one of the most interesting museums in Campania. A witness of cultural flows and national and international influences which crossed Sorrento at the end of the last century.

The Correale Museum of Terranova was established in 1924 by Fondazione Correale, established in 1902, thanks to the generous legacies of Alfredo and Pompeo Correale.

The location chosen for the Museum was "Villa alla Rota", eighteenth-century structure nestled in a typical Sorrentine citrus grove with a panoramic terrace overlooking the sea with a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Sorrento, where still today presents various collections of porcelain, paintings and furniture of the family Correale for free consulation for the public.

The Correale Museum structure is divided into three floors with 24 rooms that feature antique furniture and  majolica, European porcelain of the 18th century of Neapolitan and international backgrounds.

On the ground floor a the archeological section is held,  with  its interesting exhibits from the Imperial Age: in this area there is a carved  ara with the representations of the inauguration of the Temple of Vesta on the Palatine Hill and the remains of the necropolis of the Sorrentine peninsula dating back to the 9th to the 12th century.

Still on the Ground floor are  paintings and furnishings of the Neapolitan and foreign schools from the XVI-XIX centuries.A room is dedicated to the poet Torquato Tasso, who was born at Sorrento, where you can admire his works and funeral mask.

The first floor is dedicated to paintings and furniture of the 18th century, Oriental porcelains and Flemish painters: paintings section contemplates, among the most important works, paintings of landscapes by Caravaggio, painting by Domenico Gargiulo and the renowned work of Salvator Rosa"Marina with fishermen" . There are also important paintings by Rubens, Van Kassel and Grimmer.

The second floor is dedicated to two other important collections: the ‘natura morta’ of the 17th and 18th century together with of the "School of Posillipo", with paintings by Giovan Battista Ruoppolo, Andrea Belvedere, Gaetano Cusati and Italian and European clocks of the 18th century.

The third floor exhibits by Italian and international  porcelain;  there are  in fact rare pieces from around the world. The correale collection offers a comprehensive anthology of all European manufacturers, they are iplaced in aorder, first  the Italian ones  and  then the foreign ones. There are Italian pieces of Vezzi, Cozzi, Real Factory of Capodimonte, Royal factory Fernandea & shower; German porcelain of MeissenFüstenberg, Berlin, Nymphenburg, Frankenthal and there are exclusive Austrian Porcelain Manufactory, French and Dutch.
