Capua was an important town in the Roman period. Hannibal stayed here for 2 years during the Punic Wars. Capua’s Campanian Museum with an archaeological and medieval section, the 9th century Cathedral and the Roman bridge are worth a visit. Nearby Santa Maria Capua Vetere has the second biggest amphitheatre in Italy and an interesting underground “mitreo”, dedicated to the cult of Mitras. The visit can be combined with Caserta or S.Angelo in Formis.
