This is the only active volcano on the mainland of Europe, and provides the most characteristic view of the bay of Naples. There have been 52 eruptions since the most disastrous one of 79 AD, the last one being in 1944. Buses and cars can follow the road up to a height of 3,000 ft, from where there is a footpath to the crater (approx. ½ hour walk). Vesuvius requires half a day, and can be combined with Pompeii or Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabia.

After the visit of homes with their original frescoes, bathhouses and other public buildings, there is free time for lunch. Then there is a bus ride up to the height of 3,000 ft on the volcano, from where you can walk to the crater. Visit accompanied by authorized mountain guide. The slopes are covered with vineyards and woods and provide an innocent looking backdrop for the bustling towns below. The coach will take you to the altitude of 1,000 metres, from where you can walk to the very top and admire splendid panoramic views across the bay. Remember to bring comfortable shoes (not sandals) and your camera.
