Padula is famous for its Carthusian monastery of St Lawrence, founded by the Sanseverino family in 1305. This is one on the largest monastic complexes in the world and the height of its splendour was the Renaissance period. The courtyards, cloisters, kitchen, church and the monk’s cells are well worth a visit. It can be combined with a visit to Pertosa, Paestum or Velia.
