Cumae, founded in 750 BC, is the oldest Greek colony in the Tyrrhenian sea. It dominates the whole Phlegrean area. Cumae defeated the Etruscans in a naval battle in 474 BC and then later became Roman. The height of its splendour was 600 to 400 BC. The acropolis and Sibyl's cave dating from the 5th century BC can be visited. Cumae can be included in a Phlegrean Fields excursion, or combined with Naples.
